Become a Volunteer

Community Living Thunder Bay is looking for dedicated, caring volunteers with a strong commitment to developing a friendship with individuals that have a developmental/ intellectual disability to help them achieve full citizenship in our community.

The Volunteer Program offers rewarding experiences for volunteers and the individuals we serve. Volunteers provide a bridge between the individuals supported and the community, which in turn, enhances the inclusion of the individuals we serve. The time and talents volunteers have to share makes an incredible difference in the quality of life for the individuals we serve.

Community Friend

Community Friend

Commit to building a friendship with an individual with a developmental disability. Activities could include spending time with the individual at their home (watching movies, doing puzzles, crafts, etc.) or doing things in the community such as going for coffee, walking, going to the mall, library etc. Activities are planned with the guidance of family and/or support staff.

Leisure Volunteer

Leisure Volunteer

Assist adults with developmental disabilities with their day to day activities.
Assist staff working in the residential homes caring for supported individuals. Enhancement of existing services ie: play cards, read, watch tv or movies, teach and do crafts, puzzles or games, help with meals, walks, taking people outdoors etc. No personal care or medication duties.

Best Buddies Volunteer

Best Buddies Volunteer

Opportunity for students from Lakehead University to participate in a program designed to build friendships between adults with disabilities and students. The expectation of the program is for the buddies to meet regularly and do things together. This could be watching movies, going for coffee etc. Group outings are also a part of this program. Training and support are provided for interested participants.

Bingo Volunteer

Bingo Volunteer

Assist other volunteers to work at monthly Bingos. Selling of books, cards, and other related duties. Clean-up of discarded cards between games and clean-up of the tables at the end of the sessions. Training Provided.

Life Skills Volunteer

Life Skills Volunteer

Assist adults with developmental disabilities to develop and improve their knowledge and skills. This may include hand over hand assistance for people learning new skills, and motivating people to participate in various programs such as mending, cleaning, laundry, ironing, learning about food labels, diabetic labels, laundry labels etc.

Literacy Volunteer

Literacy Volunteer

Assisting a supported person with basic functional literacy skills ie: reading, writing, math etc. Excellent opportunity for those who may be interested in a career in teaching, or a retired teacher. Also may be of interest to those who would just like to help supported individuals to write stories or do other things that help them with basic literacy. You do not have to have a literacy background – just be willing to learn with them.

Special Events Volunteer

Special Events Volunteer (For Dances, Social Outings, Fundraising, Bingos etc.)

Assist special needs individuals to participate in social events;  assist with set up and clean up before and after events;  assist in fundraising events such as BBQ’s, Picnics, Dances, or Bingos to help raise funds for supported individuals to participate in social or recreational activities
